College of Horticulture is the earliest-established advanced personnel training institution for horticulture speciality talents. Its history can be traced back to the Department of Horticulture of the former National Central University (1921) and the former University of Nanking (1927). At present, the college hassix majors for undergraduate students: Horticulture, Landscaping,Tea Science, Landscape Architecture, Medicinal Materials, Protected Agriculture Science and Engineering. Of thesix majors, the major of horticulture is a National Featured Constructive Program and Key Discipline in Jiangsu Province. So far, College of Horticulture has trained more than 7,000 senior professionals at all levels. The college currently has a postdoctoral research station on horticulture, six doctoral authorization centers (Pomology, Vegetable Science, Tea Science, Ornamental Horticulture, Medicinal Botany, Horticulture), six master’s authorization centers (Pomology, Vegetable Science, Ornamental Plants and Horticulture, Urban Planning and Design, Tea Science, Medicinal Materials) and three professional master's authorization centers (Master of Agricultural Extension, Master of Landscape Architecture, Master of Medicinal Materials). Of all the disciplines, Vegetable Science is a key discipline which the Ministry of Agriculture and the State granted, Pomology is a key discipline of Jiangsu province, Ornamental Plants and Horticulture (including Landscape Planning) is a key discipline at the university level, Horticulture has been identified as a national key discipline and a first-level discipline in Jiangsu Province, Horticultural Science and Application is one key construction program in the third period of the “211 Project”, Modern Horticulture is an preponderant discipline in Jiangsu Province . The college currently has 160 staff, including 39 professors,53 associate professors and2069students, of whom1272 are undergraduates and797 are full-time graduate students. The college has established Key Laboratory of Biology and Genetic Improvement of Horticultural Crops (Ministry of Agriculture) and Engineering Research Center of Horticultural Crop Germplasm Enhancement and Utilization (Ministry of Education). There are 105 full-time teachers. Of them, teachers with high-grade professional titles account for 71.0%, teachers with a doctorate degree account for 82.7%, and teachers with over one year overseas academic experience accounted for 46.7%. Nine teachers are named New Century Excellent Talents of the Ministry of Education. One teacher is of the first level of the provincial “333 Talents”project, one is of the second level and three for the third level. There is one Provincial Distinguished Professor, 4 introduced high-level innovative talents and 4 remarkable young researcher of “Zhong Shan Programme”. And there is one Technology Innovation Team of “Qing Lan Project” of the Provincial Department of Education, one excellent teaching team and 3 Innovation Teams of Provincial Agricultural Committee. Since the Eleventh Five-Year plan, the college has wontwo second prize for “National Technology Invention” andtwo second prize for “National Science and Technology Progress Award”, one first prize for Jiangsu Science and Technology Progress Award, one first prize for national award for technological invention, one National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation and one nomination. The college has established a good relationship with a number of enterprises. College scholarships include: Chaoda scholarship, Palm Landscape Architecture enterprise scholarship, Xiamen Hongxuda enterprise scholarship,Jiangsu Shanshui enterprise scholarship, etc.
