On October 23, the project ‘Excellent germplasm resource and breeding for new variety of chrysanthemum’, finished by the team of professor Fadi Chen, won the ‘ Huanai Horticulture Technology Award ’ of the third Chinese Horticultural Association.
The project collecting and preserving about 3368 copies of chrysanthemum and its related species and genus, which ranks first in China , has identified 67 copies of superior germplasm and 9 superior genes. As it illustrated, the hybrid embryo abortion is the main reason for the failure of distant hybridization between the chrysanthemum. In particularly, the activity of programmed cell death related protease Caspase-like 4,9 is associated with the hybrid embryo abortion. This project established technology system to rescue the immature embryo based on the ovule culture and it was the first to report the six hybrids between Chrysanthemum species and Crossostephium Less. This project also successfully transferred the gene of anti-aphid resistance, cold resistance, etc. from exogenous species into the chrysanthemums, which broaden the gene pool. This project also established the breeding technology system of flower type, flower color, flower time and plant type. The researcher selected 92 new varieties and made apparent innovations in the color (double), type (windmill , anemone) , plant type (natural ball, full prostrate) through distant hybridization, exogenous species resistance (tolerance). The new varieties have been applied in more than 10 provinces, which made significant economic and social benefits. This project has applied 42 the national invention patent and 34 the national New Plant Varieties rights, including 16 provincial appraisal varieties. And there are more than 300 papers published, of which more than 90 articles in SCI.
‘Huanai Horticulture Technology Award’ was approved by the Ministry of Science, the highest domestic academic horticultural award established jointly by Chinese horticultural association and Beijing Huanai Agricultural Development Corporation to award those who have made outstanding contributions to scientific research and to promote the development of horticultural science and technology in China . The research group won the award (only one of ornamental horticulture group, ) through team reporting, expert evaluation trial and meeting areas, which reflects the affirmation and recognition made by domestic peer experts considering the work and industry contribution of the research group in our college.
